Inna Faliks: World premiere of “Voices” for piano by Ljova. UCLA Jewish Music Festival

“Voices”, by Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin, commissioned for Inna Faliks by Lowell Milken Fund for Jewish American Music, is a three-movement Suite for Piano and Historical recordings. Sirota (movement one – commissioned by the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies) features the recorded voice Gershon Sirota, the early 20th century cantor from Odessa, known as the “Jewish Caruso.” The piano functions as a soloist and suddenly becomes the collaborator for an unseen cantor and choir. The second movement, Zhok, features a 1912 recording of a klezmer trumpet, and the 3rd, Fraydele – the voice of the renowned Yiddish cantor and actress Freydele Oysher, recorded in 1953. The premiere took place on March 1, 2020, in Lani Hall, UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
